Making 4 Change [M4C] is an equity-oriented makerspace, a place where people come together to design and build personally meaningful projects. M4C is unique in that it merges makerspaces with community ethnography, and serves youth from non-dominant communities in Boys and Girls Clubs [BGC] in Michigan and North Carolina. We seek to address the equity-related challenges discussed in our previous blog post, make room for cultural repertoires of practice, sustained engagement towards deeper understandings, more complex designs and distributed networks of expertise.

What if we could teach 200 kids in a Detroit neighborhood how to design and build furniture? Or build solar-powered lamps to make neighborhood streets safer at night? Or start a t-shirt-making business, using handmade screen prints? What if people in the Brightmoor neighborhood – kids, teenagers and adults – could have free access to 3D printers, welding equipment, cameras, editing programs, art supplies, art classes, business workshops, design seminars and more? Working with Brightmoor community partners, the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, and Detroit Community Schools, we envision the Brightmoor Maker Space as a place for residents, particularly young people, to improve their making skills, develop intergenerational connections, and nurture community revitalization. The space will also help youth explore paths to college and/or a profession.

Over the last two years, Science Teachers’ Association of Ontario (STAO) has developed the Ministry-funded project titled, Project Innovation. Improving the pedagogical knowledge and skills of science teachers is a priority for STAO. In 2014-2015, STAO writing teams developed resources to enhance student engagement in science. Ontario teachers with extensive experiences developed content and media to help teachers direct their own learning in areas of inquiry, critical thinking and technology-enhanced learning.
